The substance had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for information.

A high-ranking official said the attack made him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
