Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.

Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
